DA SPOT INTERVIEW -
ATMOSPHERE

People love to hear about the owners of hot city clubs. Tells us about yourself.
There are 3 of us and we are all fairly young, 27 to be exact. We all contribute to the success of our business in our own ways. Our separate backgrounds weld together very nicely to form a smooth operation; we work very well together and have a great staff supporting us.
It seems like opening a nightclub is a dream deal. Tell us about it. What is it like?
There are perks in owning a nightclub, but at the same time just like any other business it is very hard work. It’s fun putting events together, for the sole purpose of entertainment for our patrons. Making sure people are having fun, is a great career.
What are your challenges?
Making sure the club stays hip and new, in a very competitive market of San Francisco. There’s a lot of night clubs, bars, and things to do in the condensed city of SF. Putting together events to get people to come to Atmosphere instead of somewhere else is a challenge; especially in this economy where everyone is holding on to their dollar tightly.
What is the most gratifying part?
The most gratifying part, wow! I’m sure my partners would agree. Everyone said we couldn’t do it, being as young as we are… and we did it (opened a night club on Broadway). The Police Permit Officer, told us he would eat his hat in the middle of the street if we survived a year. Well, our one year anniversary is coming up September 25th 2009, but guess what? He’s no where to be found and is no longer the Permit Officer. It's great to have accomplished something that everyone said would never happen.
What do you strive for on a nightly basis?
On a nightly basis, Atmosphere strives to be the best place on the block of Broadway clubs, providing a fun, safe, party environment.
How did you come up with the name?
We came up with Atmosphere or A3, because we wanted to provide 3 different atmosphere’s in one place where anybody can enjoy themselves. We have 3 different rooms or "atmospheres": a Lounge, a Bar, and a Night Club. So no matter what type of nightlife a person wants, there’s an atmosphere for every patron that walks through our doors.
Atmosphere has to be one of the nicer looking clubs in terms of decor in the city. Tell us about the vibe you have created?
Atmosphere 3 was created to provide one venue where virtually anybody can feel comfortable. Our venue is definitely one of the nicer clubs in SF and the nicest on the Broadway strip. Our 3 Atmospheres aim to provide something for everyone. With our decor of wood and steel, our feel is quite modern. Our lounge is tailored for the lower key individual where they can relax, unwind and enjoy a drink and conversation. This area features a relaxing candlelit backdrop with the mesmerizing 300 gallon salt water aquarium and comfy cove, with 6 tables and plenty of seating.

The Bar area features TV's and a pool table where one can go to watch games and events and have fun with a game of pool. And last but not least our nightclub area. This is for the party goer with our huge dance floor, exclusive VIP areas and one of a kind DJ setup which makes this the ideal place to let loose, party, and dance all night. This area has many one of a kind features, including our beautiful waterfalls and breathtaking view of the Transamerica building. With all this, it would be hard to not have a great time at Atmosphere.
What kind of place do you feel like it is?
Atmosphere is a classy venue with an Atmosphere for everyone, we attract classy good looking individuals that contribute to our venue's feel. We have great parties, happy hours, and private events, making our venue a fun place to be.Atmospheres
Do you get celebrity DJs? Like who? Who's coming up?
We take pride in booking our DJ's/talent. We book DJ's from all over the place. On a monthly basis we book famous label DJ's like Morse Code and DJ Solomon, etc. We also book DJ's like world famous DJ Apollo and DJ Shortkut. We don't forget our local DJ's such as DJ Friz B, Jason Everett and The Designer DJ's. Some others we have had are Las Vegas's own DJ Scotty Boy, and House DJ Frenchy le Freak. We just had hip hop legend Biz Markie last Friday (7/17/09).

We also bring in live talent, we had the pleasure of having the group Flipsyde perform last month before their European Tour. We have a celebrity DJ / talent coming in for our 1 year anniversary but I'm not gonna say who it is, but stay tuned cause your not going to want to miss that night.
What kinds of promo nights do you do? Why?
Atmospheres
We have Promo nights with a lot of alcohol brands. We team up with Remy Martin a lot for big parties. We usually have free tastings/open bars from 10pm-11pm on featured alcohol. We do this for brand exposure, and it's a good reason for our patron's to come in early and enjoy themselves with out reaching in to their pocket. We often throw fashion shows with local boutiques and have other various parties we throw featuring things such as free massages, free makeovers, and free appetizers.
What is the craziest thing you have ever seen go down?
I have seen a lot, but one that sticks out has to do with this giant mirror we have. The mirror is about 10ft tall and 6ft wide. There are two things that happen quite often with this mirror; the first thing is that people who have had a little to much to drink walk straight into it all the time and try to play it off like it did not happen. The second thing is the funniest though, we often catch people dancing in front of it checking themselves out while they are dancing and getting really into it with themselves.

I think they forget that there are other people around, its really hilarious. What advice would you give a person just getting into the scene?
If your looking to party and want a party that suites you, do a little bit of homework before you go out. See what event is going on at a venue and pay attention to the DJ's. Some people don't realize that a night will be a hip hop night and they expect a house night and vice versa, leaving them with a disappointing experience.
What advise would you give a new DJ?
If you are a new DJ… PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE… you don't want to do a set in front of hundreds of people and not know how to blend one song into the other. Also, a new DJ should really concentrate on building his/her brand and following.Atmospheres
Any upcoming events you would like us to know about?
Our 2nd Saturday Party "Touch" is always a good party to come out to, we always put on a hot DJ and if you like great looking people, touch is just one of the nights to come to. Another great event is our "Life of Sin" Party, this one is always sold out, with great drink specials, great visuals, and great looking party-goers. The ONE you are not going to want to miss is our 1 year anniversary, its going to be one of the best events of the year.
